Overview

Belagavi railway station is the principal railway station of Belagavi city, a major urban centre in northern Karnataka close to the state border with Maharashtra and Goa. It lies on the route connecting Pune and Miraj with Londa Junction, which further branches towards Hubballi and Vasco da Gama.

Background and history

The line passing through Belagavi originated as part of the metre-gauge network developed during the late 19th century by the Southern Mahratta Railway, which connected the Bombay Presidency hinterland to the port of Mormugao in Portuguese Goa. The Belagavi–Londa segment was part of this trunk route, with associated branches built in the same era.

After Indian independence and the integration of Goa into the Indian Union, the route was converted to broad gauge in stages under Project Unigauge, opening Belagavi to long-distance broad-gauge services. Following the formation of the South Western Railway zone in 2003, Belagavi station was placed under its Hubballi division. Subsequent infrastructure upgrades have included track doubling and electrification of the Pune–Miraj–Londa corridor.

Layout and facilities

The station has multiple platforms with foot overbridges and basic passenger amenities, including waiting halls, retiring rooms, computerised reservation counters and a parcel office. It is connected to the city by road through the Belagavi bus stand and local taxi services, and lies within reach of Belagavi Airport at Sambra.

Services

Belagavi handles a mix of long-distance express and passenger trains. It provides direct rail connectivity to cities including Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolhapur, Hubballi and Vasco da Gama, and serves as an intermediate halt for several inter-state trains running between Maharashtra, Karnataka and Goa.

Significance

As the principal railhead of Belagavi district, the station serves a regional catchment that includes industrial, educational and military establishments, notably the Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre and the cantonment area. It plays an important role in tourism traffic to nearby destinations such as Saundatti, Gokak Falls and the hill stations of the northern Western Ghats.
