Overview

The station is part of the Joka–Esplanade corridor, which is being constructed as an elevated metro line connecting the south-western suburb of Joka with the central business district at Esplanade. Behala Chowrasta lies at the busy intersection commonly referred to as Chowrasta (literally "four-way crossing"), close to Diamond Harbour Road and the local commercial district.

Background

The Joka–Esplanade line was originally conceived as part of an east–west extension of metro services in Kolkata, with construction supervised by the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) on behalf of the Indian Railways. The corridor is designed to ease road congestion along Diamond Harbour Road, which has historically been the main artery linking Behala to central Kolkata.

The first stretch of the line, between Joka and Taratala, was opened to passenger service, while the section continuing through Behala Chowrasta towards Majerhat and Esplanade has been progressed in subsequent phases. Behala Chowrasta is one of the intermediate stations between Taratala and Majerhat on this corridor.

Layout

The station is built as an elevated structure above the road carriageway, with side platforms serving the two directions of travel. Access is through staircases, escalators and lifts from concourse level to street level, with ticketing and security facilities at the concourse.

Connections

The station is integrated with surface transport at the Behala Chowrasta junction, where it connects with city bus routes, autorickshaws and private intermediate transport along Diamond Harbour Road and adjoining roads.

Significance

Behala is one of the most densely populated and commercially active parts of southern Kolkata, and the addition of metro connectivity at Behala Chowrasta is intended to reduce travel time to the city centre and decongest road traffic on Diamond Harbour Road. The station also improves access for residents of Behala to employment, educational and healthcare facilities in central Kolkata.
