The Joka–Esplanade line is being built to connect the southwestern suburbs of Kolkata with the central business district at Esplanade, providing an alternative rapid transit option to the heavily used road corridor along Diamond Harbour Road. Behala Bazar is one of the intermediate elevated stations on this corridor and lies in the stretch between Behala Chowrasta and Taratala, an area characterised by busy markets, schools and residential blocks.
The Purple Line runs from Joka in the south-west to Esplanade in central Kolkata. The planned sequence of stations on the corridor includes Joka, Thakurpukur, Sakher Bazar, Behala Chowrasta, Behala Bazar, Taratala, Majerhat, Mominpore, Khidirpur, Victoria and Esplanade. The line is built almost entirely on an elevated viaduct in its southern stretch and transitions underground as it approaches the central city.
Like other stations on the southern stretch of the Purple Line, Behala Bazar is designed as an elevated station with a ground-level entry/exit concourse, a mezzanine for ticketing and security checks, and an upper-level island or side platform for trains in both directions. The design follows standard Kolkata Metro specifications for the corridor, including provisions for escalators, lifts and automatic fare collection gates.
Behala has historically been served by surface transport along Diamond Harbour Road and the Behala tram routes. The introduction of metro services through Behala Bazar is expected to reduce travel time between Behala and central Kolkata, ease pressure on Majerhat and Taratala road junctions, and integrate the area with the wider Kolkata Metro network at interchange stations such as Majerhat (with the suburban rail network) and Esplanade (with Line 1 and Line 2).
