The town of Beawar was founded in the 1830s by Colonel Charles George Dixon of the British East India Company as the administrative centre of the Merwara territory. Through the colonial period and after Indian independence, Beawar developed as a commercial town known for its trade in cotton, grain, cement and mineral-based industries, and for its production of edible oils and sweets such as the locally associated tilpatti. Until the 2023 reorganisation of districts in Rajasthan, the area formed a tehsil and a major sub-division of Ajmer district.
Beawar district was announced as part of a wider reorganisation of districts in Rajasthan, in which the state government created several new districts by carving out territory from existing ones to bring administration closer to citizens. The district was constituted from tehsils previously falling under Ajmer district.
The district is situated in the semi-arid central plateau of Rajasthan. The Aravalli hills traverse the area, influencing local drainage and producing pockets of mineral-rich terrain. The region is known for deposits of marble, feldspar, soapstone and masonry stone, which support quarrying and stone-processing industries around Beawar town and its hinterland.
Beawar has historically been one of Rajasthan's significant trading centres. Key economic activities in the district include:
As a district of Rajasthan, Beawar is administered by a District Collector and Magistrate, with policing under a Superintendent of Police. The district falls within the Ajmer revenue division. It is divided into tehsils and sub-divisions for revenue administration, and into panchayat samitis and municipal bodies for local self-government, including the municipal council of Beawar town.
Beawar lies on important road and rail corridors connecting Ajmer with Pali, Jodhpur and Udaipur. National Highway 58 (formerly part of NH 8) passes through the district, linking it with the Delhi–Ahmedabad axis. Beawar railway station, on the Ajmer–Marwar section of North Western Railway, is the principal railhead.
The creation of Beawar district recognises the town's long-standing role as a regional commercial and industrial hub and is intended to streamline administration for the surrounding rural areas of the former Merwara tract. The district holds historical importance as the seat from which Merwara was administered in the 19th century.
