Bathinda is one of the principal railway hubs of the Malwa region of Punjab, with lines radiating in multiple directions towards Delhi, Ambala, Firozpur, Rewari and Sri Ganganagar. Bathinda Cantonment station is situated on the rail network in the vicinity of the Bathinda Military Station, an important Indian Army installation. As is typical of cantonment stations across India, it provides a railhead close to military establishments and surrounding civilian neighbourhoods, supplementing the main city station.
The station handles a limited number of passenger services compared with Bathinda Junction. Long-distance and express trains generally use the junction, while the cantonment station is more relevant for short-distance and local connectivity.
The presence of a dedicated cantonment station reflects Bathinda's role as a strategic military and logistical centre in southwestern Punjab. The city hosts significant defence, thermal power, refinery and agricultural infrastructure, and its rail network supports both civilian transport and movement related to these establishments.
