The station lies within the town of Batala, which is situated between Amritsar and Pathankot in the Majha plains of Punjab. As a junction, Batala connects the main Amritsar–Pathankot route with a branch line that historically extended towards Qadian.
The line through Batala forms part of the broad-gauge network developed in undivided Punjab during the colonial era to connect the major centres of the region with the rail trunk system. Batala's position on the Amritsar–Pathankot corridor gave it junction status, with a branch line constructed to serve Qadian, a town of religious and historical significance in the area.
The station handles passenger trains operating along the Amritsar–Pathankot route, including services that connect Batala with Amritsar, Pathankot and onward destinations. It also serves passengers travelling to and from Qadian via the connecting branch service.
Batala is one of the larger industrial and commercial towns of the Majha region, known for its foundries and engineering workshops. The railway station provides an important link for commuters, traders and pilgrims, particularly those visiting religious sites in and around Batala, Qadian and Dera Baba Nanak.
