Basti station is one of the principal railway stops between Gorakhpur and Lucknow, serving as the main rail gateway for Basti district and surrounding areas in the Purvanchal region of Uttar Pradesh. It functions as a stop for several long-distance mail, express and passenger trains operating across northern and eastern India.
The station is situated on the broad-gauge, double-track and electrified Gorakhpur–Lucknow route, which forms part of the trunk corridor linking Lucknow with Gorakhpur and onwards to Chhapra and Barauni. Through this line, Basti has direct rail connectivity with major cities including Lucknow, Kanpur, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and others, depending on through services.
Basti railway station falls under the Lucknow division of the North Eastern Railway (NER), with its zonal headquarters at Gorakhpur.
