Basirhat station is one of the principal stops on the Hasnabad branch line, which connects the suburban township of Hasnabad with Sealdah, the major terminus in Kolkata. The line passes through a series of small towns and rural settlements in the eastern part of North 24 Parganas, near the international border with Bangladesh, and Basirhat is among the busier intermediate stops on the route.
The station is situated in the town of Basirhat, the headquarters of the Basirhat subdivision. It provides commuter rail access for residents travelling towards Barasat, Dum Dum and Sealdah in the Kolkata metropolitan region. Beyond Basirhat, the line continues eastward to Hasnabad, the present terminus of the branch.
The station is served primarily by Kolkata suburban EMU local trains operated under the Sealdah division of Eastern Railway. These services link the town with the wider Kolkata Suburban Railway network.
As Basirhat is a populous town and an administrative subdivisional centre, the station plays an important role in daily commuter movement, the transport of agricultural produce, and access to markets and educational institutions in Kolkata. The Hasnabad line also serves areas close to the Sundarbans region and the border with Bangladesh, giving the corridor strategic and regional importance.
