The station functions as a halt for passenger and express trains travelling between Ratlam and Ujjain, two of the principal junctions in western Madhya Pradesh. Barnagar town, historically known for its trading and agricultural activity in the Malwa region, is connected to the broader rail network through this station.
The Ratlam–Ujjain line on which Barnagar is situated is a part of the wider rail corridor linking the Mumbai–Delhi main line at Ratlam Junction with Ujjain Junction, from where lines extend further towards Bhopal, Indore and Maksi. As a result, the station provides Barnagar with onward connections to several major cities in central and western India.
Barnagar serves as the principal rail access point for the town and the surrounding rural belt of the Malwa plateau. It supports passenger movement for trade, education and pilgrim traffic, particularly to Ujjain, one of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) of Hindu tradition and the venue of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela.
