Barmer is situated in the Thar Desert and is surrounded by sandy plains, low hills and rocky outcrops. The terrain is arid, with sparse vegetation typical of desert ecosystems. The city lies relatively close to the international border with Pakistan, with the border running through the western parts of the district. The climate is hot and dry, with very high summer temperatures, low and erratic rainfall concentrated in the south-west monsoon, and cold winter nights.
The town derives its name from a local ruler, and the broader region historically formed part of Mallani, a tract long associated with Rajput clans of the Marwar region. Under medieval rule it was linked to the Rathore dynasty of Jodhpur. Following the integration of the princely states after Indian independence in 1947, Barmer became part of the state of Rajasthan, and the district was constituted with Barmer city as its headquarters.
The economy of Barmer combines traditional desert agriculture, livestock rearing, and handicrafts with modern energy-sector activity.
Barmer is part of the Marwari cultural sphere, with folk music, dance and oral traditions strongly represented. Communities such as the Manganiyars and Langas, traditional musician communities of western Rajasthan, are associated with the region's musical heritage. The annual Barmer Thar Festival showcases folk performances, camel events, traditional sports and crafts. Local cuisine reflects desert conditions, with dishes based on millet, pulses, dairy and dried vegetables.
Barmer functions as the headquarters of the Barmer district administration, headed by a District Collector and a Superintendent of Police. Civic administration of the city is carried out by the municipal council. The area returns members to the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly and forms part of the Barmer Lok Sabha constituency.
Barmer is significant as the principal urban centre of a strategically located border district, as a hub of traditional Rajasthani crafts, and as a focal point of India's onshore petroleum sector. The Thar Express rail link, when operational
