The station is situated in Barkur, a small town in Udupi district known for its historical importance as a former capital of the Tulu region under the Vijayanagara administration. The town lies near the Sita River and is close to the coastal towns of Brahmavar, Kundapura and Udupi. The railway alignment passes through a landscape characterised by paddy fields, coconut groves, rivers and short tunnels typical of the Konkan terrain.
The Konkan Railway was constructed by the Konkan Railway Corporation Limited, a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Railways, Government of India. The 741-kilometre line between Roha in Maharashtra and Thokur near Mangaluru was commissioned in 1998, and integrated several intermediate stations along the Karnataka coast, including those serving Udupi district. Barkur railway station forms part of this corridor and is served by stopping passenger and select express services that operate along the route.
The station provides rail connectivity to Barkur and the surrounding rural belt of Udupi district, complementing road access via National Highway 66, which runs roughly parallel to the railway line. By linking the area to the broader Konkan and Mangaluru–Mumbai network, the station contributes to local mobility, pilgrimage travel associated with the temples of Udupi and the Tulu coast, and the movement of workers and students to larger urban centres.
