Barhni is a wayside station that primarily caters to passenger services. Owing to its location close to the international boundary with Nepal, the station also functions as a gateway point for cross-border movement of travellers heading towards adjoining Nepalese settlements. The station handles a modest volume of passengers, mostly drawn from the local agrarian population and traders.
The station is situated in the Siddharthnagar district, which forms part of the Basti division of Uttar Pradesh. It connects the region with district headquarters and onward to larger junctions in eastern Uttar Pradesh, including Gorakhpur, which serves as the headquarters of the North Eastern Railway zone. Road connectivity from Barhni links the station to nearby market towns and the border crossing.
As part of the North Eastern Railway, the station's operations, infrastructure, and staffing are managed by the zonal administration headquartered at Gorakhpur. Indian Railways oversees ticketing, signalling, and train operations through the divisional setup.
Barhni's significance lies in its role as a rural rail access point in a border district that has historically depended on rail transport for affordable long-distance travel. The station supports daily commuter movement, seasonal labour migration, and connectivity for residents of villages in the Siddharthnagar–Nepal border belt.
