Barhani Bazar lies in the northern part of Siddharthnagar district, in the alluvial plains of the Tarai. The district shares a long, open border with Nepal, and Barhani is among the settlements that act as a crossing and trading point between the two countries. The terrain is flat and largely agricultural, drained by minor tributaries of the Rapti–Ghaghara river system.
Administratively, Barhani Bazar falls under Siddharthnagar district, which was carved out of Basti district in 1988. The district headquarters is at Naugarh. Local civic functions in the town are handled through a local body, while rural areas around it are administered through the gram panchayat system under the relevant development block.
The economy of Barhani Bazar is centred on agriculture and cross-border trade. Paddy, wheat, sugarcane, pulses and oilseeds are the principal crops grown in the surrounding villages. The town functions as a wholesale and retail mandi for agricultural produce and consumer goods, with small-scale commerce in textiles, groceries, hardware and farm inputs. Its proximity to the Indo-Nepal border supports informal and formal trade flows in everyday commodities.
Barhani Bazar is connected by road to other towns in Siddharthnagar district, including Naugarh and Shohratgarh, and onward to Gorakhpur, which is the nearest major urban and rail hub in eastern Uttar Pradesh. State highways and district roads link the town to the Indo-Nepal border crossing in its vicinity.
The population is predominantly rural in character, with Hindi and Bhojpuri being the commonly spoken languages. Awadhi and other regional dialects are also encountered. The community profile reflects the broader pattern of eastern Uttar Pradesh, with both Hindu and Muslim residents engaged in agriculture, trade and services.
As a border-area bazar town, Barhani holds local significance as a marketplace serving cultivators from surrounding villages and as one of the points of everyday interaction along the open Indo-Nepal frontier. It is part of the wider Buddhist heritage region of Siddharthnagar district, which is associated with ancient Kapilavastu and the early life of Gautama Buddha.
