Barh railway station is situated on the busy Patna–Mokama section of the Howrah–Delhi main line, one of the principal trunk routes of Indian Railways. The station handles a mix of passenger, express and a limited number of mail trains, and acts as the rail gateway for the town of Barh and surrounding rural areas on the southern bank of the Ganges.
The line through Barh forms part of the historical alignment laid down by the East Indian Railway Company in the second half of the 19th century, which connected Howrah with the upper Gangetic plain via Patna and Mughalsarai. After the reorganisation of Indian Railways' zonal structure, this section came under East Central Railway, headquartered at Hajipur, which was created in 2002.
The town of Barh itself is also notable as the site of the Barh Super Thermal Power Station, a major NTPC generating project, for which the railway station provides connectivity for personnel and ancillary movement.
The station has multiple platforms serving the up and down lines of the double-track, electrified main route. Standard passenger amenities such as ticketing counters, waiting areas and a footover bridge are provided. Barh is positioned between the larger junctions of Patna Junction to the west and Mokama Junction to the east.
As an intermediate halt on a high-density corridor, Barh provides essential rail access for residents of eastern Patna district. It connects the local population with major cities along the Howrah–Delhi route and supports daily commuter travel toward Patna, Mokama and Barauni.
