Barasat

Overview

Barasat is a city and municipal area in the state of West Bengal, India. It serves as the headquarters of the North 24 Parganas district and lies in the northern part of the Kolkata metropolitan region. Situated to the north-east of Kolkata, Barasat is an important administrative, educational, and commercial centre, and is known among other things for its Kali Puja and Jagaddhatri Puja celebrations.

Geography

Barasat lies on the alluvial plains of southern Bengal, north-east of central Kolkata. The terrain is flat and low-lying, characteristic of the Ganges delta. The town is connected to the wider region through National Highway 12 (formerly NH 35) towards Bangaon and the international border at Petrapole, and through links leading to Barrackpore, Madhyamgram, and Kolkata. It is part of the Kolkata urban agglomeration.

Administration

Barasat is administered by the Barasat Municipality, which manages civic services within the town. As the headquarters of North 24 Parganas, the city houses the office of the District Magistrate, the district court, and other district-level administrative establishments. The Barasat Sadar subdivision, of which the city is the headquarters, is one of the subdivisions of the district.

Politically, Barasat forms a Lok Sabha constituency as well as a state Legislative Assembly constituency in West Bengal.

Transport

Rail

Barasat Junction is a major station on the Eastern Railway's Sealdah–Hasnabad–Bangaon–Namkhana suburban network. Trains from Sealdah connect Barasat with central Kolkata, and lines branch from here towards Bangaon, Hasnabad, and Bashirhat, making it an important junction for commuters from the surrounding districts.

Road

National Highway 12 passes through Barasat, linking it with Kolkata to the south and Bangaon and the India–Bangladesh border to the north. State and local routes connect Barasat with Madhyamgram, Barrackpore, Habra, and other neighbouring towns. Bus services operated by state and private operators run from Barasat to various parts of West Bengal.

Air

The nearest airport is Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport at Dum Dum, located a short distance to the south of Barasat.

Education

Barasat is an established educational centre in North 24 Parganas. Notable institutions associated with the town include:

  • West Bengal State University, headquartered at Barasat, which affiliates a large number of colleges across North 24 Parganas.
  • Barasat Government College, one of the older colleges in the area.
  • Barasat College and other general degree colleges affiliated to West Bengal State University.
  • A range of government and private schools serving the city and its suburbs.

Culture

Barasat is widely known in West Bengal for its elaborate Kali Puja celebrations, when large themed pandals are set up across the town and attract visitors from Kolkata and adjoining districts. The town also observes Jagaddhatri Puja, Durga Puja, and other Bengali festivals with notable public participation. Local fairs, cultural programmes, and literary events form part of the town's civic life.

History

Barasat developed as a settlement on the route from Kolkata towards the eastern frontier of Bengal during the colonial period. In the early nineteenth century, the East India Company established a cadet college at Barasat for the training of young officers, which functioned for a brief period before being closed. The town later grew as an administrative outpost and, after independence, expanded rapidly with the growth of the Kolkata metropolitan region. It was designated the headquarters of North 24 Parganas when the district was carved out of the larger 24 Parganas district.

As the district headquarters of North 24 Parganas, Barasat plays a central role in the administration of one of the most populous districts in India.
