Background

The station takes its name from Barakhamba Road, a major arterial road in central Delhi that derives its name from a historic twelve-pillared (barah khamba) tomb of the Tughlaq period situated nearby. The road runs from Connaught Place in the west to the Tilak Marg–Mandi House junction area in the east, and is lined with corporate offices, commercial towers and institutions, making the station a significant commuter destination during weekdays.

History

Barakhamba Road station opened as part of the first underground stretch of the Delhi Metro, when the Blue Line was extended from Tis Hazari to Barakhamba Road, inaugurating metro services into the central business district of the capital. The station was subsequently linked further east when services were extended to Indraprastha and beyond, integrating it into the wider Blue Line that now runs between Dwarka Sector 21 and the dual termini at Noida Electronic City and Vaishali.

Layout and facilities

The station is built underground with a concourse level above the platform level. It has standard DMRC facilities including automatic fare collection gates, security screening, escalators, lifts for differently-abled passengers, tactile paths, and ticket vending machines. Multiple entry and exit points provide access to Barakhamba Road, the Statesman House area and the eastern radial of Connaught Place.

Connections

The station is within walking distance of the Rajiv Chowk metro station, the Blue Line–Yellow Line interchange at Connaught Place, and is also close to Mandi House metro station further east. It is served by Delhi Transport Corporation buses operating along Barakhamba Road and the Connaught Place inner and outer circles.

Significance

As one of the earliest underground stations to open in Delhi, Barakhamba Road station played a notable role in establishing public acceptance of metro travel in the capital. Its location at the heart of the city's central business district makes it a heavily used station for office commuters, and it provides convenient access to landmarks such as the Statesman House, the FICCI building, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, and the commercial blocks of Connaught Place.
