The railway station forms a key transit point for the town, which is also known for the nearby pilgrimage centre of Bhavanarayana Swamy temple and the beach at Suryalanka. The station lies between the larger junctions of Vijayawada to the north and Chennai Central to the south.

Background

The Howrah–Chennai main line, on which Bapatla is situated, is one of the principal rail corridors of the Indian Railways network, connecting the eastern and southern parts of the country. The section passing through coastal Andhra Pradesh, including Bapatla, was developed as part of the East Coast State Railway in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and was subsequently integrated into successive zonal reorganisations of Indian Railways. Today the route is fully double-tracked and electrified.

Services

The station handles a mix of long-distance express, superfast, and passenger services running along the coastal corridor between Howrah, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, and Chennai. It also serves as a halt for several intercity services connecting Bapatla with regional centres such as Guntur, Tenali, Nellore, and Ongole.

Significance

As the principal railway station of Bapatla town and the administrative headquarters of Bapatla district (formed in 2022 through the bifurcation of Guntur district), the station plays an important role in passenger movement, including students attending the educational institutions in the town such as Bapatla Engineering College and Bapatla College of Agriculture.
