Bankhedi is a small town in the Narmada valley, located between the divisional headquarters of Itarsi and the city of Jabalpur. The station functions primarily as a halt for passenger and a limited number of express services that operate on the Itarsi–Jabalpur corridor. The route is electrified and double-tracked, forming part of the principal east–west connection between western and eastern India through central Madhya Pradesh.
The station falls under the jurisdiction of the West Central Railway, a zone of Indian Railways with its headquarters at Jabalpur. Operationally, the Itarsi–Jabalpur section is managed by the Jabalpur railway division.
Bankhedi is served chiefly by passenger and MEMU services connecting Itarsi with Jabalpur and other intermediate stations such as Pipariya, Gadarwara and Narsinghpur. Long-distance trains generally pass through without halting, given the station's role as a smaller wayside facility.
The station provides rail access for residents of Bankhedi tehsil and the surrounding agricultural belt of the Narmada basin. It supports local commuter movement, especially towards Itarsi Junction, which is one of the busiest railway junctions in central India.
