Balwant Singh emerged through the Indian domestic football system, which during his formative years was structured around the National Football League and, from 2007 onwards, the I-League. Forwards from Punjab and the northern states have historically formed an important part of Indian club football, and Balwant developed within this tradition.
Balwant has played for clubs across the I-League and Indian Super League, contributing as a striker in both league and cup competitions. His career has spanned the period during which Indian football transitioned from the I-League being the top division to the establishment of the Indian Super League as the country's premier club competition.
He has been called up to the senior India national team, taking part in matches under the All India Football Federation. His international appearances came during a period in which India featured in regional tournaments such as the SAFF Championship and qualifying rounds for the AFC Asian Cup.
As a forward active in the top tier of Indian football for an extended period, Balwant Singh forms part of the cohort of domestic players who shaped Indian club competition during the I-League era and the early years of the Indian Super League.
