The station lies in the Ballygunge area, one of the older planned residential and commercial neighbourhoods of south Kolkata. It is connected to nearby localities such as Gariahat, Park Circus, Kasba and Dhakuria by road, and is within reach of the Park Circus and Ballygunge tram and bus corridors. The station's proximity to educational institutions, hospitals and shopping districts of south Kolkata contributes to consistently heavy daily passenger footfall.
Ballygunge Junction functions as a branching point on the Sealdah South line. From here, the suburban network diverges in two principal directions:
The station is served almost exclusively by EMU local trains operated by Eastern Railway. Trains originating or terminating at Sealdah pass through Ballygunge Junction, making it one of the busiest interchange points on the southern suburban grid.
The station has multiple platforms arranged to handle services on both the Budge Budge branch and the Sonarpur-bound main line. Foot overbridges connect the platforms, and the station has entrances on both the eastern (Gariahat side) and western (Park Circus side) approaches.
As a junction within the Kolkata Suburban Railway, Ballygunge Junction plays a structural role in the city's daily commute. It allows passengers from the southern suburbs to interchange between branches without having to travel up to Sealdah terminus. The station is also an important node for residents of south Kolkata travelling to Sealdah, Bidhannagar Road and onward destinations on the Eastern Railway network.
