Ballari is a historic city in the eastern part of Karnataka, with a cantonment area that dates back to the British colonial period. The cantonment was an important garrison settlement, and railway connectivity in the region developed alongside the broader expansion of metre and broad gauge lines across the Deccan in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The station at the cantonment supplements Ballari Junction, which is the main railhead for the city and a node on routes connecting Karnataka with Andhra Pradesh.
The station falls under the jurisdiction of Indian Railways and serves passenger movement in and around the cantonment area of Ballari. It is positioned on the rail corridor linking Ballari with neighbouring towns and cities in the Hubballi and Guntakal divisional networks of South Western Railway and South Central Railway respectively.
As a secondary halt, Ballari Cantonment provides local access to the cantonment neighbourhood, reducing dependence on Ballari Junction for short-distance and intra-regional passenger traffic. Ballari itself is significant as a major centre of iron ore mining and steel production in Karnataka, and rail infrastructure in the district plays a role in both passenger movement and regional logistics.
