Balichak is situated on the busy double-track Howrah–Kharagpur corridor, which forms part of the broader Howrah–Chennai main line. The station lies between the town of Panskura to the east and the major junction of Kharagpur to the west. The surrounding region is largely agricultural, and the station functions as an important access point for commuters travelling toward Kolkata and Kharagpur.
The Howrah–Kharagpur stretch was developed in the late nineteenth century by the Bengal Nagpur Railway (BNR) as part of the rail link connecting Howrah with the southern and central parts of the country. After the reorganisation of Indian Railways in 1955, the section came under the South Eastern Railway zone. Stations along this corridor, including Balichak, have since been progressively electrified and upgraded to handle dense suburban, mail and express, and freight traffic.
Balichak is primarily a halting station for local passenger and EMU services operating between Howrah, Panskura, Kharagpur and Midnapore. A number of passenger trains on the Howrah–Kharagpur and Howrah–Midnapore routes stop at the station, providing daily commuter connectivity to Kolkata. Most long-distance express trains pass through without halting.
The station is a key local rail node for the Balichak area, supporting daily commuting for students, traders and workers travelling to Kharagpur, Panskura and Howrah. It also serves as a transit point for residents of the nearby rural belt who depend on rail for affordable long-distance travel.
