The station lies in the coastal plains of northern Odisha, between the major junctions of Kharagpur to the north and Bhadrak to the south. It is geographically close to Balasore, the principal town and district headquarters in the region. The surrounding area is largely agricultural, with Bahanaga Bazar functioning as a local market hub for the neighbouring villages.
As a wayside halt on a heavily trafficked trunk route, Bahanaga Bazar primarily caters to passenger services connecting smaller settlements with regional centres. The trunk line itself sees a high density of long-distance express, mail and goods traffic moving between the eastern and southern parts of the country, although most of these services pass through without stopping.
The station gained wider public attention in June 2023 when a serious multi-train accident occurred in its immediate vicinity, involving the Coromandel Express, the Yesvantpur–Howrah Superfast Express and a stationary goods train. The incident, one of the most significant railway accidents in India in recent decades, prompted a detailed investigation by the Commissioner of Railway Safety and led to renewed scrutiny of signalling and interlocking practices on the Indian Railways network.
