The station is situated in Bagalkot, the administrative headquarters of Bagalkot district in northern Karnataka. Bagalkot is an intermediate station on the route connecting Hotgi Junction in Maharashtra with Gadag Junction in Karnataka. The line provides rail connectivity between northern Karnataka and the Mumbai–Solapur corridor, and links Bagalkot with stations such as Bijapur (Vijayapura), Badami and Gadag. Through this network, the station offers services towards Hubballi, Bengaluru, Solapur and other regional centres.
The station falls under the jurisdiction of the South Western Railway zone of Indian Railways, which was created in 2003 with its headquarters at Hubballi. Operations on the Hotgi–Gadag section are managed under this zone.
The station serves as the principal rail access point for Bagalkot town and the surrounding taluks, supporting passenger movement for the district's population, students, traders and pilgrims visiting nearby heritage destinations. It also contributes to freight movement associated with the cement and sugar industries that are prominent in the region.
