The station is situated on the Gorakhpur–Narkatiaganj–Muzaffarpur route, an important corridor connecting eastern Uttar Pradesh with northern Bihar. It functions as a stop for passenger and express services running between major hubs such as Gorakhpur, Narkatiaganj, and Muzaffarpur.
Bagaha is a sub-divisional town located near the foothills bordering Nepal, and the railway station has historically supported regional movement of agricultural produce, sugarcane traffic linked to local mills, and passengers travelling toward the Valmiki Tiger Reserve area. The line through Bagaha was originally laid in metre gauge during the colonial period and was later converted to broad gauge as part of the Indian Railways gauge conversion programme (Project Unigauge).
As one of the principal stations between Narkatiaganj and Gorakhpur, Bagaha provides rail connectivity to a region that is otherwise served largely by road. Its proximity to the Indo-Nepal border and to the Valmiki Tiger Reserve gives it a role in tourist and pilgrim traffic in addition to routine passenger movement.
