Babhnan station functions primarily as a halt for passenger and a number of express services running between Gonda Junction and Gorakhpur Junction. The station provides basic facilities including platforms, ticketing, and waiting space, and serves as the principal rail access point for the surrounding rural and semi-urban catchment in eastern Basti district.
The station is situated on the Gonda–Gorakhpur trunk corridor, which is part of the broader Barauni–Gorakhpur–Lucknow route. Nearby stations on the same line include Mankapur Junction and Basti towards the west, and Khalilabad and Gorakhpur towards the east. Babhnan town lies along National Highway connectivity in the Basti–Sant Kabir Nagar belt, with road links feeding into the station.
The Gonda–Gorakhpur section, on which Babhnan lies, has been doubled and electrified as part of capacity-augmentation works undertaken by Indian Railways on the North Eastern Railway. Electrified services on the route allow electric locomotive haulage of passenger and express trains halting at the station.
For residents of Babhnan and adjoining villages, the station offers direct rail connectivity to major cities such as Gorakhpur, Lucknow, Varanasi, and onward destinations including Delhi and Mumbai through connecting trains. It also supports local commuter movement within the Basti–Gorakhpur belt.
