The university takes its name from Baba Farid, the 12th–13th century Punjabi Sufi saint Sheikh Fariduddin Ganjshakar, who is closely associated with the town of Faridkot. It was established by the Government of Punjab as a specialised state university to consolidate and regulate health sciences education in the state, a function previously distributed among general universities.
