The station lies in the city of Azamgarh in eastern Uttar Pradesh. Azamgarh district is bordered by Mau, Ballia, Ghazipur, Jaunpur, Sultanpur, Ambedkar Nagar and Gorakhpur districts, placing the station in a region of dense rail and road connectivity in the Purvanchal sub-region.
Azamgarh is situated on the broad-gauge route connecting Mau Junction with Shahganj Junction. Through these junctions, the station provides onward connections towards Varanasi, Lucknow, Gorakhpur and major destinations across north and central India.
The station handles a mix of passenger, mail and express trains. It serves as an important boarding point for residents of Azamgarh district travelling to metropolitan centres including Delhi, Mumbai, Lucknow and Kolkata.
