Overview

The station is built as an elevated structure and consists of separate platform levels for each of the two lines that meet here. The Yellow Line connects Samaypur Badli in the north with HUDA City Centre in Gurugram to the south, while the Pink Line (Line 7) runs along Delhi's longest corridor, between Majlis Park and Shiv Vihar, passing through Azadpur on its way around the capital.

Location and surroundings

Azadpur lies on Grand Trunk Road in North Delhi and is well known for the Azadpur Mandi, one of Asia's largest wholesale markets for fruits and vegetables, operated by the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee. The station also serves nearby residential colonies, the Adarsh Nagar area to the north and Model Town to the south. Road connectivity is provided by feeder buses operated by the Delhi Transport Corporation and DMRC, along with auto-rickshaws and cycle rickshaws.

History

The Yellow Line platforms at Azadpur opened with the northern extension of the line from Jahangirpuri to the area, as part of the expansion that eventually reached Samaypur Badli. The Pink Line platforms were added later when Line 7 was constructed in phases under the Delhi Metro's Phase III expansion, with the Majlis Park–Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus section being among the first segments of the Pink Line to open. The integration of both lines made Azadpur one of several major interchange points on the network.

Station layout

The station has dedicated concourses and platforms for each line, with paid-area connections allowing passengers to interchange without exiting through fare gates. Standard DMRC facilities are available, including ticket counters, automatic fare collection gates, customer care, lifts, escalators, and provisions for differently-abled passengers.

Significance

As a junction between a radial line (Yellow) and an orbital line (Pink), Azadpur reduces travel times for commuters moving between northern Delhi and the eastern, western, and southern parts of the city without requiring a transfer through busier central interchanges such as Rajiv Chowk or Kashmere Gate. Its proximity to the Azadpur wholesale market and major arterial roads also makes it an important node for daily commuters and traders.
