Singh worked during the first half of the twentieth century, a period in which several Indian scholars undertook systematic studies of the mathematical traditions of ancient and medieval India. His career placed him within this circle of researchers who sought to document, translate, and analyse early Indian mathematical texts for a modern academic audience.
Singh is best known as a co-author, with Bibhutibhushan Datta, of History of Hindu Mathematics: A Source Book. The work surveys arithmetic and algebra as developed in classical Indian mathematical literature, drawing on Sanskrit sources and presenting them in a form accessible to readers in English. The book has remained a frequently cited reference in the historiography of Indian mathematics.
Through his collaborative scholarship, Singh contributed to establishing the history of Indian mathematics as a distinct area of academic study. His work helped make primary material from the Indian mathematical tradition available to a wider audience and provided a foundation for later researchers in the field.
