The company was founded by Kasturbhai Lalbhai, an industrialist from Ahmedabad associated with the Lalbhai family that had earlier built a substantial textile business. The manufacturing site at Atul in southern Gujarat was developed as an integrated chemical complex, and the township that grew around it took the name Atul. The complex hosts manufacturing units, research and development facilities, and associated infrastructure.
Atul's product portfolio is organised around two principal segments: Life Science Chemicals, which includes crop protection products, pharmaceutical intermediates, and aromatic chemicals; and Performance and Other Chemicals, covering colours, polymers, bulk chemicals, and intermediates such as resins and adhesives. The company supplies inputs used in dyestuffs, agrochemical formulations, epoxy resins, and various specialty applications.
The principal manufacturing operations are located at Atul in Gujarat, with additional facilities and subsidiaries that extend the company's reach in India and abroad. The firm has historically pursued joint ventures and technical collaborations with foreign chemical companies to localise production of specialty intermediates. Exports form a significant portion of revenue, with shipments to markets in Europe, North America, and East Asia.
Atul has established subsidiaries focused on specific product lines, and has entered joint ventures with international partners for the manufacture of resins and specialty chemicals. The Lalbhai Group connection links it operationally and historically to Arvind Limited, although the two companies function independently as listed entities.
Atul is considered one of the early integrated chemical complexes in independent India, and the township model around its Gujarat plant is often cited as an example of a private industrial settlement. Its long-running operations in agrochemicals, dyes intermediates, and aromatic chemicals have placed it among notable Indian suppliers in these niches, particularly for export-oriented intermediates.
