Atlee was born in Chennai into a Tamil family. He pursued a diploma in visual communication and developed an early interest in filmmaking through still photography and short films. He entered the film industry as an assistant director under S. Shankar, working on the Tamil films Enthiran (2010) and Nanban (2012). His apprenticeship under Shankar shaped his preference for high-budget, technically ambitious cinema.
Atlee made his directorial debut with Raja Rani (2013), a romantic drama starring Arya, Nayanthara, Jai and Nazriya Nazim, produced by AGS Entertainment. The film was a critical and commercial success and won the National Film Award for Best Tamil Feature Film at the 61st National Film Awards.
His next directorial, Theri (2016), starred Vijay and was a major commercial success. He followed it with Mersal (2017), again with Vijay, which featured the actor in a triple role and addressed themes including healthcare. Bigil (2019), the third Atlee–Vijay collaboration, centred on women's football and was among the highest-grossing Tamil films of the year.
Jawan (2023), Atlee's Hindi-language debut, starred Shah Rukh Khan in a dual role alongside Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi and Deepika Padukone. Produced by Red Chillies Entertainment, the film became one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time and one of the highest-grossing Hindi films globally.
Atlee co-founded the production company A for Apple Productions with his wife Priya. The banner has backed Tamil films including Andhaghaaram (2020).

Atlee's films are typically built around a star-driven mass hero template, often featuring dual or multiple roles, an emotional family backstory, and a social cause woven into the narrative—covering issues such as medical malpractice, education, women's empowerment in sport, and prison reform. His screenplays favour interlinked timelines, large ensemble villains and stylised action sequences scored by composers including G. V. Prakash Kumar, A. R. Rahman and Anirudh Ravichander.
Atlee married Krishna Priya, an actress and dancer, in 2014. The couple are based in Chennai and have a son.
Atlee is regarded as one of the leading commercial directors of contemporary Tamil cinema, credited with sustaining the pan-India appeal of Vijay through the late 2010s. With Jawan, he became one of a small group of Tamil directors to achieve large-scale success in mainstream Hindi cinema, contributing to the cross-industry collaborations that have characterised Indian filmmaking in the 2020s.
