The Aster DM Healthcare group traces its origins to a single clinic established by Indian physician Azad Moopen in Dubai. Over the years the venture expanded into a multi-format healthcare provider, building tertiary-care hospitals, multi-speciality clinics and retail pharmacies under brands including Aster, Medcare and Access. The company subsequently extended its operations into India, with a particular focus on the southern states of Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.
Aster DM Healthcare is incorporated in India and is listed on Indian stock exchanges, making it a publicly traded entity. The group has historically operated as a unified business spanning India and the GCC region, while pursuing a strategy of separating its India and Gulf operations to allow each business to be managed and capitalised independently.
The group runs multi-speciality and tertiary-care hospitals branded primarily as Aster in India and as Aster and Medcare in the GCC. Service lines include cardiology, oncology, neurology, orthopaedics, organ transplantation, women and children's care, and emergency medicine.
Outside of hospitals, the group operates a chain of outpatient clinics and a large retail pharmacy network in the Gulf region, complementing its hospital-based services with primary care and pharmaceutical retail.
Aster also offers laboratory and diagnostic services, both as part of its hospital operations and through standalone diagnostic centres.
Azad Moopen, the founder, has served as the chairman and managing director of the group, and members of the Moopen family have held senior leadership and board positions in the company.
Aster DM Healthcare is considered significant within the Indian healthcare sector for its cross-border footprint linking the Indian healthcare market with the large expatriate Indian population in the GCC. The group is a notable example of a healthcare business founded by a non-resident Indian (NRI) entrepreneur that has scaled across multiple countries while subsequently listing in India.
