Ashutosh Gowariker is an Indian filmmaker, screenwriter and actor known for directing large-scale historical and period dramas in Hindi cinema. He came to international prominence with Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001), which received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and went on to direct films such as Swades, Jodhaa Akbar and Panipat.

Gowariker was born in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, and grew up in Mumbai. He began his career as an actor in Hindi films and television during the late 1980s, appearing in films such as Holi (1984), CID, Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1994) and the television series Circus, where he worked alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan, both of whom would later star in his films.
Gowariker made his directorial debut with Pehla Nasha (1993), followed by Baazi (1995) starring Aamir Khan. His breakthrough came with Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001), produced by Aamir Khan, set in the Victorian era and centred on a cricket match between Indian villagers and British officers. The film won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and was India's official entry to the Academy Awards, where it was nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
He followed it with Swades (2004) starring Shah Rukh Khan, a film about an NRI scientist returning to rural India. Jodhaa Akbar (2008), starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai, depicted the relationship between the Mughal emperor Akbar and the Rajput princess Jodhaa, and won several Filmfare and National Awards. Subsequent films include What's Your Raashee? (2009), Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey (2010) based on the Chittagong uprising, Mohenjo Daro (2016) set in the Indus Valley civilisation, and Panipat (2019), based on the Third Battle of Panipat.
Gowariker founded Ashutosh Gowariker Productions Pvt. Ltd. (AGPPL), under which he has produced and co-produced films, including the Marathi film Ventilator (2016) directed by Rajesh Mapuskar, which won three National Film Awards. He has also produced television projects, including the historical series Everest on DD National.
Gowariker has received multiple Filmfare Awards, National Film Awards (through the films he directed and produced) and international honours. In 2010, the Government of France conferred on him the rank of Knight in the Order of Arts and Letters (Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres) for his contribution to cinema. He has served on juries of international film festivals and has been a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Gowariker is associated with revitalising the historical and period epic in Hindi cinema, combining mainstream storytelling with researched recreations of specific eras. Lagaan is widely cited as a landmark in the global visibility of Indian commercial cinema, and his subsequent works have continued to focus on themes drawn from Indian history, social reform and cultural identity.
