Ashok Nagar metro station

Ashok Nagar metro station is an elevated station on the Green Line (Line 2) of the Chennai Metro, serving the Ashok Nagar neighbourhood in the western part of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is operated by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), a joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Location

The station is located along Inner Ring Road in Ashok Nagar, a residential and commercial locality in west Chennai. It provides access to surrounding areas such as KK Nagar, Kasi Theatre Junction and parts of Saidapet, and connects with local bus services on the Inner Ring Road corridor.

Line and connections

Ashok Nagar lies on the Green Line of the Chennai Metro, which runs between Chennai Central and St. Thomas Mount, passing through CMBT (the city's main bus terminus) and Vadapalani. The line was developed as part of Phase I of the Chennai Metro project, providing east–west and onward connectivity within the city.

Background

The Chennai Metro was conceived to ease traffic congestion in the metropolitan area and provide a high-capacity rapid transit alternative. Phase I, comprising the Blue Line and the Green Line, was sanctioned by the Government of India and implemented by CMRL. The elevated section of the Green Line on which Ashok Nagar is situated was opened to the public during the rollout of Phase I services along the Inner Ring Road corridor.

As an elevated station, the typical layout includes a ground-level entry, a concourse level with ticketing, automatic fare collection gates and security screening, and an upper platform level with side platforms serving trains in both directions. Standard amenities include lifts, escalators, signage in Tamil, English and Hindi, and provisions for differently-abled commuters.

The station improves public transport access for residents of Ashok Nagar and adjoining western neighbourhoods, linking them to major destinations such as Chennai Central, the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) and St. Thomas Mount, the latter of which serves as an interchange with the Chennai Suburban Railway and is planned as a multi-modal hub.
