Chopra began playing competitive chess at a young age and progressed through India's age-group circuit, which is administered by the All India Chess Federation under the umbrella of the International Chess Federation (FIDE). Like many of his contemporaries, he advanced through the FIDE titles of Candidate Master and International Master before reaching the Grandmaster level.
Chopra has competed in open tournaments in India and Europe, a circuit that has long served as the primary source of GM norms and rating points for Indian players. He has participated in events of the FIDE rating circuit, including national championships and international open tournaments.
He is part of the wave of Indian Grandmasters who emerged in the late 2010s, a period during which India became one of the most prolific producers of new GMs worldwide, following the trail set by Viswanathan Anand.
Chopra's career reflects the broader expansion of Indian chess in the 21st century, characterised by an increasing number of young players obtaining the Grandmaster title and competing regularly on the international circuit.
