The screen name "Arya" was given to him by director Lingusamy.

Career

Early years

Arya made his acting debut with the Tamil film Arjun (2004), directed by Stalin Ravi. His breakthrough came with Vasanthabalan's Albhutha Theevu and Lingusamy's romantic action film Sandakozhi (2005), co-starring Vishal and Meera Jasmine, which became a major commercial success.

Rise to prominence

He earned wide critical acclaim for his portrayal of a tribal youth in Vetrimaaran's debut film Polladhavan (2007) and later for the period drama Pariyerum Perumal's producer credit, as well as his lead role in Naan Kadavul (2009), directed by Bala. Naan Kadavul, in which he played an Aghori sadhu, won the National Film Award for Best Direction and is regarded as one of his career-defining performances.

Subsequent films

Arya headlined a range of films across genres, including Madrasapattinam (2010) directed by A. L. Vijay, in which he played a British-era wrestler; Boss Engira Bhaskaran (2010); Avan Ivan (2011) directed by Bala; Vettai (2012); Settai (2013); Raja Rani (2013); Irumbu Kuthirai (2014); Yennai Arindhaal (2015) opposite Ajith Kumar; Kadamban (2017); and Magamuni (2019), in which he played a dual role.

He made his Hindi film debut with Aurangzeb (2013) and his Malayalam debut with Avatharam (2014). His later notable releases include Sarpatta Parambarai (2021), directed by Pa. Ranjith, in which he played the boxer Kabilan, a role that brought renewed critical recognition. He has since appeared in films such as Captain (2022), Enemy (2021) opposite Vishal, and Sardar (2022).

Production

Through his banner The Show People, Arya has produced several Tamil films, including Vetri Selvan (2014) and ventures aimed at supporting younger directors.

Television

Arya hosted the celebrity matchmaking reality show Enga Veetu Mapillai on Colors Tamil in 2018, which centred on the search for his own bride.

Personal life

In March 2019, Arya married actress Sayyeshaa, granddaughter of veteran actress Saira Banu's sister, in a ceremony held in Hyderabad. The couple have a daughter, born in 2021, and a son, born in 2023.

Significance

Arya is regarded as one of the prominent Tamil actors of his generation who has balanced commercial cinema with author-backed roles in the works of directors such as Bala, Vetrimaaran and Pa. Ranjith. His willingness to undergo physical transformation for roles—most notably for Naan Kadavul, Madrasapattinam and Sarpatta Parambarai—has been frequently noted by critics.
