The narrative is set partly in the princely setting of Gadwal and follows the legacy of Arundhati, a princess of valour, and her descendant of the same name. The story revolves around the resurrection of the sorcerer Pasupathi, who had been entombed by Arundhati generations earlier, and his return to take revenge on her bloodline. The film draws on motifs from Indian folklore, tantric tradition, and palace-era period drama.
The film was produced on a substantial budget for Telugu cinema of the period, with extended schedules dedicated to prosthetic makeup design and special effects sequences. The art direction recreated palace and fort interiors typical of Telangana's Gadwal Samsthanam region. Visual effects work was a central feature of the production, integrating live action with computer-generated imagery for transformation and supernatural sequences.
The soundtrack was composed by Koti. The songs and the background score, including chants and percussion-led cues, were noted for reinforcing the film's period and supernatural atmosphere.
Arundhati released in 2009 and became a major commercial success in the Telugu-speaking states. It was widely credited with re-establishing the viability of large-scale fantasy and period films in Telugu cinema. The film was dubbed into multiple Indian languages, including Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi, broadening its reach.
The film received recognition at the National Film Awards for its makeup and special effects work, along with several state-level Nandi Awards in technical and acting categories. Anushka Shetty's performance in the title role was particularly highlighted at industry award ceremonies.
Arundhati is regarded as a turning point for Anushka Shetty's career, establishing her as a leading actress capable of carrying a large-format film. It also marked a major breakthrough for Sonu Sood in Telugu cinema as a screen antagonist. The film influenced subsequent Telugu productions in the supernatural and period-fantasy genres, and is often cited in discussions of pre-Baahubali large-scale Telugu filmmaking.
