Sharma was part of the generation of cricketers who featured in Indian domestic cricket during the late 1970s and 1980s, a period when the Ranji Trophy and other zonal tournaments served as the principal proving ground for Indian players. Punjab, his state side, competed in the North Zone alongside teams such as Delhi, Haryana, Services, Jammu and Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh.
Sharma played first-class cricket for Punjab in domestic competitions organised under the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). His appearances were primarily in the Ranji Trophy, India's premier first-class tournament, which is contested on a zonal and knockout basis between state associations.
As a domestic-level first-class cricketer, Sharma forms part of the broader pool of state-level players who have contributed to the depth of Indian cricket. Punjab cricket during his era produced several players who went on to represent India, and the state side remained a competitive presence in the North Zone of the Ranji Trophy.
