Ultramarathon running, defined as any footrace longer than the standard marathon distance of 42.195 kilometres, includes events of 50 km, 100 km, 24-hour timed runs, and multi-day stage races. The sport had a limited presence in India during the late twentieth century, and Indian participation at international ultramarathon events remained sparse. Bhardwaj emerged as one of the few Indian runners to consistently compete in such events overseas.
Bhardwaj has taken part in ultramarathon competitions across several countries, running in formats that include 24-hour track and road races as well as longer multi-day events. He has been associated with the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) circuit, in which national federations field runners for world championships and qualifying events.
Through his participation, he contributed to placing India on the international ultra running map at a time when the discipline was still developing a domestic following. His efforts helped draw attention to ultra running among Indian distance athletes and recreational runners.
Bhardwaj's career is often cited in the context of the growth of ultramarathon and endurance running in India, alongside the broader expansion of the sport that gathered pace in the 2000s and 2010s with the establishment of events such as the Bangalore Ultra and the Himalayan Crossing. His sustained international participation made him one of the recognisable Indian names in global ultra running circles.
