Arni University was established under a state legislative act of the Government of Himachal Pradesh, which empowers the state to recognise private universities operating within its territory. As a state private university, it is authorised to award degrees recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India under the relevant provisions of the UGC Act, 1956.
The campus is situated in the Kangra region of Himachal Pradesh, in the western Himalayan foothills. The district is also home to several other higher education institutions and is known for landmarks such as the Kangra Fort, the town of Dharamshala, and the Pong reservoir.
The university is organised into faculties and schools that cover a broad range of disciplines. Typical areas of instruction at Arni University include:
Programmes are offered at the diploma, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral (Ph.D.) levels, with admission generally based on qualifying examinations and entrance assessments as prescribed by the university and applicable regulators.
As a private university constituted by a state act, Arni University functions under the oversight of statutory bodies such as the Board of Governors, the Academic Council, and the Board of Studies. The Chancellor is the ceremonial head of the university, while the Vice-Chancellor serves as the principal academic and administrative officer. The university operates within the regulatory framework of the UGC and, where applicable, professional councils such as the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the Bar Council of India (BCI), and the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI).
Arni University contributes to the expansion of higher education in Himachal Pradesh, a hill state where access to professional and technical education has historically been concentrated in a few public institutions. By offering programmes in technical, professional, and liberal disciplines from a campus in Kangra, the university adds to regional educational capacity alongside public institutions such as Himachal Pradesh University and the Indian Institute of Technology Mandi.
