Born in Asansol, West Bengal, Atwal was introduced to golf at a young age and developed his game on Indian courses before moving into the professional ranks. He spent his early professional years on the Indian domestic circuit and the Asian PGA Tour, where he established himself as one of the leading players of his generation in Asia.
Atwal turned professional in 1995. He became a dominant figure on the Asian PGA Tour around the turn of the century, winning the Asian Tour Order of Merit in successive seasons and collecting several tournament victories across Asia. His performances in Asia helped him gain access to the European Challenge Tour and the European Tour.
Atwal earned playing privileges on the European Tour, where he competed regularly in the early 2000s. His consistent results in Europe and Asia raised his world ranking and opened the route to the United States.
Atwal joined the PGA Tour and competed across the second half of the 2000s with mixed fortunes. The high point of his career came at the 2010 Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he won as a Monday qualifier. The victory made him the first golfer of Indian origin to win an official PGA Tour event and earned him a multi-year tour exemption.
Following the Wyndham win, Atwal continued to play on the PGA Tour and the Web.com Tour (now Korn Ferry Tour), while also making appearances on the Asian Tour and on the PGTI in India. He has been associated with promoting professional golf in India and mentoring younger Indian players.
Atwal's 2010 PGA Tour win is regarded as a landmark moment for Indian golf, expanding the international profile of the sport in the country. Alongside contemporaries such as Jeev Milkha Singh and a later generation including Anirban Lahiri and Shubhankar Sharma, he is credited with helping to establish Indian players as competitors at the highest levels of professional golf.
Atwal has been based for long stretches of his career in the United States, particularly in Florida, where he trains and lives with his family while continuing to represent India in international competition.
