Arekere lies along Bannerghatta Road, one of the principal arterial roads running south from central Bengaluru. The locality is bordered by neighbourhoods such as Bilekahalli, Hulimavu, BTM Layout and Gottigere, and provides access to areas further south including Bannerghatta and the Bannerghatta National Park region. The name "Arekere" is derived from Kannada, with kere meaning "lake", reflecting the historical presence of a tank in the area, a feature common to many older settlements in and around Bengaluru.
The locality falls under the jurisdiction of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the municipal corporation responsible for the civic and infrastructural needs of Greater Bengaluru. For electoral purposes, Arekere is part of the Bommanahalli zone of the BBMP and lies within the Bommanahalli assembly constituency of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.
Like much of the Bannerghatta Road belt, Arekere has transitioned from a peripheral village settlement into a mixed residential and commercial suburb, driven by the southward expansion of Bengaluru. The locality contains a mix of independent houses, gated apartment complexes and small commercial establishments. Proximity to the IT and corporate clusters of Electronic City, BTM Layout and Koramangala has made it a sought-after residential area for working professionals.
Healthcare and educational institutions located along Bannerghatta Road, including major hospitals near Bilekahalli and IIM Bangalore further north, are easily accessible from Arekere. The area is also served by BMTC bus routes operating on the Bannerghatta Road corridor.
Road connectivity is provided primarily by Bannerghatta Road, which links the area to central Bengaluru in the north and to Bannerghatta in the south. Bus services are operated by the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). The locality is also expected to benefit from the planned extension of the Namma Metro network along the Bannerghatta Road corridor, which forms part of the city's Phase 2 metro project under the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL).
