Arambagh is situated in the western part of Hooghly district, in a largely flat alluvial tract drained by the Dwarakeswar, Mundeswari and Rupnarayan river systems. The area lies on the eastern fringe of the Rarh region, transitioning from the lateritic uplands of the west to the deltaic plains of southern Bengal. The surrounding countryside is predominantly agricultural, with paddy cultivation forming the basis of the rural economy.
The town is administered by the Arambagh Municipality, which manages civic functions such as water supply, sanitation, roads and local taxation. Arambagh is also the administrative seat of the Arambagh subdivision of Hooghly district, which includes several community development blocks in the western portion of the district. The town is part of the Arambagh Lok Sabha constituency, a reserved (Scheduled Caste) parliamentary seat.
Arambagh functions as a market town for the agricultural hinterland, dealing in paddy, potato, vegetables and dairy produce. The area is known regionally for poultry and dairy enterprises, and hosts a number of cold storages serving potato cultivators in Hooghly and adjoining districts. Small-scale trade, retail and services associated with its role as a subdivisional headquarters also contribute significantly to the local economy.
Arambagh is connected by road to Kolkata, Bardhaman, Bankura and Medinipur through state highways and district roads. The town is served by Arambagh railway station on the Howrah–Arambagh line of the Eastern Railway, providing rail links to Howrah and intermediate stations in Hooghly district. State and private bus services link the town to other parts of West Bengal.
The town hosts a range of schools affiliated to the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education and the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education, along with degree colleges affiliated to the University of Burdwan. Bengali is the principal language, and major festivals such as Durga Puja, Kali Puja, Saraswati Puja and Rath Yatra are widely observed.
