Aparna comes from a family with a musical background, which shaped her early interest in singing before she moved into acting. She trained in Carnatic music and performed as a vocalist before entering films, and she has continued to lend her voice as a playback singer alongside her acting career.
She made her acting debut with Sundarikkutty in 2015. Her breakthrough came with Maheshinte Prathikaaram (2016), directed by Dileesh Pothan and starring Fahadh Faasil, in which she played Jimsy. The film was a critical and commercial success and established her as a leading young performer in Malayalam cinema.
Subsequent Malayalam films include Sarvopari Palakkaran (2017) opposite Anoop Menon, and roles in films across genres through the late 2010s.
Aparna made her Tamil debut and earned widespread acclaim for her role as Sundari (Bommi) in Soorarai Pottru (2020), directed by Sudha Kongara and produced by Suriya's 2D Entertainment. The film, inspired by the life of Air Deccan founder G. R. Gopinath, was released on Amazon Prime Video. For her performance, she received the National Film Award for Best Actress at the 68th National Film Awards.
Alongside acting, she has contributed vocals to Malayalam film soundtracks, performing songs in productions she has been associated with as well as in independent musical projects.
Aparna Balamurali is regarded as part of the generation of performers who emerged through the new-wave of Malayalam cinema in the mid-2010s, characterised by realist storytelling and ensemble-driven narratives. Her National Award win for a Tamil film, while being primarily a Malayalam actress, brought attention to cross-industry casting in South Indian cinema.
