Anwar Ali belongs to a film family with long-standing associations in the Hindi film industry of Bombay (now Mumbai). His elder brother, Mehmood, was among the most popular comedians in Hindi cinema between the 1960s and 1980s, and several members of the family pursued careers in acting, production, or related crafts.
Anwar Ali appeared in supporting and character roles in Hindi films, often in productions linked to his brother's circle of collaborators. His work was concentrated in the popular cinema of the late 1960s and the 1970s, a period during which family-led production banners and ensemble star casts were common in Bombay films.
While Anwar Ali did not attain the lead-actor stardom of some of his contemporaries, his presence in supporting roles contributed to the ensemble character of mainstream Hindi films of his era. He is also of interest as part of the wider Mehmood family's contribution to Hindi cinema.
