The stage name "de Calangute" follows a long-standing convention among Konkani tiatr performers, who often adopt the name of their native village as part of their public identity. Calangute, located in Bardez taluka of North Goa district, has historically contributed many performers to the Konkani stage.
Antonette de Calangute worked as an actress in Konkani-language theatre. The tiatr form, which originated in the late nineteenth century among Goan migrant communities in Mumbai, combines dramatic acts with musical interludes known as kantaram and is performed widely across Goa as well as in Goan diaspora centres in Mumbai, the Persian Gulf and beyond.
As a stage performer active in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, she was part of a generation of women artistes who sustained the Konkani theatre tradition during a period of expansion in commercial tiatr productions in Goa.
