Annamalai University (AU) is a public state university located in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, India. Set on a sprawling campus of around 1,500 acres (6.1 km²), the university offers programmes across a wide range of disciplines, including arts, science, engineering, management, humanities, agriculture, and physical education.
With over 32,480 students residing on its campus, Annamalai University is regarded as one of the largest teaching and residential universities in Asia. The institution has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in the fourth cycle, and was awarded the highest A+ grade in 2022.
The university is recognised as one of the institutions in India hosting a 'Centre with Potential for Excellence in Particular Area' (CPEPA), with a focus on drug development and climate change. It is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU). Degrees awarded by the Annamalai University senate are mutually recognised by Indian universities as well as by foreign universities within the Commonwealth.
The university's Division of Continuing Education, also known as the Directorate of Distance Education, is a permanent member of the Association of Management Development Institutions in South Asia (AMDISA), which administers the South Asian Quality System (SAQS) accreditation for participating institutions.
