The Chennai Metro is a mass rapid transit system serving the Chennai metropolitan area. Phase I of the project was sanctioned in 2009 and construction began the same year, with revenue services starting in 2015. Phase I included two corridors: the Blue Line linking Washermanpet (later extended to Wimco Nagar) with Chennai International Airport, and the Green Line connecting Chennai Central with St. Thomas Mount.
Anna Nagar East station forms part of the underground stretch of the Blue Line that runs through the densely populated residential and commercial neighbourhoods of north-western Chennai. The locality of Anna Nagar, named after former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. N. Annadurai, is among the more prominent planned residential areas in Chennai, originally developed in the 1960s and 1970s.
As an underground station, Anna Nagar East comprises a concourse level housing ticketing, security and customer service facilities, with platforms situated below it. The station provides escalators, lifts and staircases for vertical circulation, and is equipped with platform screen doors. Standard CMRL passenger amenities such as automatic fare collection gates, token and smart card vending, and surveillance systems are provided.
The station serves residential pockets of Anna Nagar East and adjoining commercial corridors. It connects passengers to other parts of the Chennai Metro network, including key interchange points along the Blue Line, and via bus services operated by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) on the surrounding road network.
Anna Nagar East metro station improves public transport access for one of Chennai's well-known residential neighbourhoods, reducing dependence on road-based commuting in a corridor that has historically experienced heavy congestion. It is part of CMRL's broader effort to provide an integrated rapid transit network across the metropolitan area.
