Lahiri was born in Pune in 1987 into a family connected with the armed forces; his father, a doctor in the Indian Army, was posted in different parts of the country, and Anirban took up golf as a child while the family was based in Bangalore. He developed his game on courses in Karnataka and trained under Indian coach Vijay Divecha during his formative years.
He had a successful amateur career in India before turning professional in 2007, after which he initially competed on the Professional Golf Tour of India and the Asian Tour.
Lahiri established himself as one of the leading players on the Asian Tour, winning multiple titles on the circuit. He topped the Asian Tour Order of Merit in 2015, becoming the second Indian after Jeev Milkha Singh to do so. The same year he won the Maybank Malaysian Open and the Hero Indian Open, both co-sanctioned events on the European Tour, which lifted him into the world's top 40.
His strong 2015 season earned him entries into the year's major championships. At the 2015 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits, Lahiri finished tied for fifth, then the best finish by an Indian male golfer in a major championship.
Lahiri was selected for the International Team at the 2015 Presidents Cup at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea in Incheon, becoming the first Indian to play in the event. He returned to the International Team at the 2022 Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Lahiri shifted his base to the United States to play full-time on the PGA Tour from the 2015–16 season onwards. His best result on the PGA Tour came at THE PLAYERS Championship in March 2022 at TPC Sawgrass, where he finished as runner-up, one stroke behind the winner.
He represented India at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where golf returned to the Olympic programme after a long absence.
Along with players such as Jeev Milkha Singh, Arjun Atwal, Shiv Kapur, and S. S. P. Chawrasia, Lahiri has been a leading figure in the growth of Indian professional golf on the international stage. His top-five finish at the 2015 PGA Championship and his runner-up finish at THE PLAYERS Championship in 2022 are among the strongest performances by an Indian on the global tours, and his selection for two Presidents Cup teams marked a notable expansion of Indian representation in elite team golf.
